Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Abkhazia in Italy

The Mission's core objectives are to promote objective information about Abkhazia within Italy's political and public information space, to develop public and cultural diplomacy, and to organize events that introduce Italian audiences to the history, culture, and traditions of Abkhazia.

The Mission was officially registered and opened on 5 October 2017 by then-Deputy Foreign Minister of Abkhazia Kan Taniya, together with Ambassador-at-Large of the Abkhaz Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vito Grittani, by order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia. Kan Taniya and Vito Grittani were appointed to oversee its activities.
Since 2017, the Mission has organized more than 40 public, cultural, and expert events. Kan Taniya and Vito Grittani have taken part in dozens of interviews on Italian television, and the Mission's work has been covered in hundreds of publications by Italian online media outlets.

One of the Mission's most significant projects was the first conference held in the Italian Parliament devoted to the right of peoples to self-determination and to Abkhaz statehood. Taking part online were the President of the Republic of Abkhazia and Mussa Ekzekov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the World Abaza Congress.

Kan Taniya is a diplomat, author, and educator. He was born on 7 November 1987 in Sukhum

He studied International Relations at the University of Florence and Law at Abkhazian State University. He entered the diplomatic service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012.

From 2014 to 2018, he served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia.

From 2018 to 2025, he served as Ambassador-at-Large of the Abkhaz Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since 2026, he has served as Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Abkhazia in the Russian Federation.

His diplomatic rank is Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, 2nd Class.

He speaks Abkhaz (native) and Russian (second native language), and is fluent in Italian and English.

He is co-author of a book on the diplomacy of the Republic of Abkhazia and teaches courses on the theory of international relations, negotiation practice, and the Italian language.
